Being a model involves a lot more than being pretty. An important step is to get a decent portfolio, or at least a few good images, to present to agencies. Karin contacted me for just this reason. She wanted strong fashion photographs to show off her best features, to impress the agencies and get signed.
After a series of conversations, discussing different ideas we had a mood board, location and date set. We had two styles in mind. First a natural and sensual black and white portrait with a lot of presence. The second style should be more bohemian, but still strong and independent.
Therefore, one morning in August we went to what has become one of my favourite spots for editorial bohemian fashion portraits. With reasonably clear skies I relied mostly on natural light for the colour images, but used a softbox for fill. This worked really well and gave the images a bit more depth to them, to highlight Karins bone structure.
For the black and white portrait we moved into the shade under some nearby trees to create some more shadows and contrast and I used the softbox as the main light, positioned very close to Karin’s face, to create that soft sensual look we were after.
In addition to being very photogenic, Karin was an absolute joy and very inspiring to work with, which is equally important if you want to build a modelling career.
