I met Jasmine in northern Stockholm one overcast summer morning to shoot some retro inspired fashion images with a link to the late 80s. We’d been discussing the shoot over the last week and had settled on an moody monochrome theme.
As usual, I had been on a location hunt to fit the theme. We settled on a bridge in Stockholm, full of the grey concrete and low quality grafitti we were after, to bring us back in time some 25 years or so. The mood was edgy and dark. The primary colour was naturally black. All suitable late 80s characteristics.
For lighting I decided it needed to be hard and directional with good quality in the highlights and sharp shadows. I knew the perfect equipment would be an Elinchrom Ranger pack with just one head and a 44cm square reflector with a grid. It would give us exactly the qualities I was looking for and with 1100ws have enough power to compete with any ambient light around, to make sure we got the shadows where we wanted them. Naturally, halfway through the shoot it started raining, so competing with the sun was never an issue.
In post production, to get the images to gel even better with the retro theme, I introduced some Fuji Provia feel to the photos. They bring back memories of a certain rather famous singer from a very successful Swedish music export from the late 80s, don’t you think?
